The Packaging Engineer designs, evaluates, and implements packaging designs that are an integral part of the organization's Product Development process for new and existing parts and end products.
This individual develops the designs, tests standards and guidelines for developing packaging solutions for the organization's products. They collaborate with internal resources and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging as well as packaging efficiency goals.
This position will be the owner of the total package cost, responsible for providing the best shipping options by identifying the most efficient combination of carton size, packing materials, shape, pallet configuration and container loading.
They will execute new packaging systems for all products by working collaboratively with cross functional teams (i.e. creative department, product development, quality, manufacturing, regulatory, marketing, suppliers etc.) in various locations to ensure project success. Liaises and works closely with our TTi Suzhou office to execute projects within budget and time constraints.
Designs, tests, analyzes, and selects materials for packaging based on durability, cost effectiveness and sustainability; designs and develops corrugated product displays for Retail Sales; keeps familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the package engineering field; maintains a broad network of users and suppliers; creates and manages a standard materials library for packaging and manuals; creates container loading and pallet configuration diagrams; and specifies and analyzes the testing of packaging at the suppliers and laboratory.

70% New Product IntroductionPackaging Design
Collaborates with Product Teams to design packaging for TTI Floor Care Products including; commercial and retail Carpet Washers, Uprights and Canisters, Hand Held, Sticks, Air Purifiers, Batteries and Chargers and other products as needed;
Communicates packaging design data to development teams and suppliers;
Designs aftermarket packaging including; Cleaning Solutions and Product Accessories;
Creates packaging / material standards and specifications;
Creates packaging, manual, on-product label materials reference library;
Design, document and coordinate cartons samples;
Build container and pallet loading plans / diagrams;
Creates and maintains all packaging related documentation within business systems;
Ensures business systems are updated and accurate in regards to weights and dimensions, container loading qty. and pallet qty. PDM Link and Oracle.
Creates and maintains library of customer packaging and shipping requirements and liaises with customer service and data governance.
15% Product Line Support / Value Engineering
Works cross functionally to develop ideas to reduce cost through packaging material, packaging efficiency, packaging design, material standards and container loading improvements.
Works to design packaging quality improvements.
Works collaboratively to develop packaging for derivative models.
5%Testing, analysis, and material selection
Reviews all supplier test data.
Initiates regular validation testing of our supplier test data.
Ensures packaging projects are within company and regulatory specifications.
Manages package testing request made by customers.
Regularly evaluates packaging integrity and product integrity on packaging tested through standard shipping methods.
5%Product Merchandizing Pallet and Floor Displays
- Designs and develops corrugated product displays for Retail Sales.

Minimum Job Requirements:
5 years of packaging design experience in high volume, consumer product goods manufacturing preferred.
Previous experience with corrugate packaging, paper board packaging, molded pulp and EPS foam supports, blister packs required.
Previous experience with packaging graphics and finishes like Flexography, Lithography, Foils, emulsion and UV coatings required.
Previous experience working directly with overseas suppliers (i.e. China) to communicate packaging specifications required.
Previous experience with Big Box retailers and related packaging specifications required.
Pro-E/Creo experience a plus.
Previous experience with packaging design/pallet layout software required (i.e. TOPS, Cape).
Working Knowledge of ISTA/ASTM testing methods required.
Working knowledge of distribution and logistics methodologies required.
Previous experience working with NPD (new product development) strongly preferred.
Demonstrated creative ability with designing and documenting packaging specifications.
Demonstrated ability to develop standardized test protocols, running tests, and analyzing and reporting results, including financial analysis.
Must be able to manage and resolve issues with component suppliers and contractors.
Must be able to manage multiple complex and dynamic projects in parallel with minimal guidance and instruction.
Proficient in common office applications (MS Office, MS Project, PowerPoint).
Creative yet practical and hands-on in problem solving and decision making.
Must possess ability to communicate effectively (written and verbally) with different levels/functions in the organization, including the ability to discuss and explain complex technical details to non-technical team audiences.
